Первый космонавт планеты Ю.А. Гагарин проводил свой отдых и послеполетное восстановление здоровья - в мае 1961 г. - в Сочи. Улица Гагарина заложена в конце 1950-х, как главная магистраль микрорайона на пустыре, составлявшем лётное поле Сочинского аэродрома. Названа в честь первого в мире человека, полетевшего в космос в 1961. На улице расположен маленький сквер, где Ю. А. Гагарин 15 мая 1961 посадил Гималайский кедр. Здесь же, с 1974, установлен бюст космонавта, стоявший первоначально напротив сквера, возле кинотеатра «Родина».
