Музей открыт в 1984 г., его экспозиции рассказывают историю аэропорта «Иркутск». Первый в Иркутске аэродром был сооружен в июне 1925 г. на левобережье реки Ангары, около города Иркутска. 25 июня того же года весь Иркутск встречал самолеты группы перелета Москва – Пекин. Первый Иркутский аэродром продолжал существовать и действовать. В июле
было организовано первое платное катание пассажиров на самолете «Ю-13».
