Музей открыт в 1990 г. Научные сотрудники музея работают над созданием выставок по краеведческой тематике, которые экспонируются внутри музея. Создаются передвижные выставки для работы в школах города. В музее проводятся экскурсии: «История политической ссылки в Братске-Острожном», «Культура и быт эвенков севера Иркутской области в нач. XX в.», «Культура русского населения Приангарья в нач. XX в.».
