Музей основан в 1923 г. Коллекция музея истории Бурятии является одной из самых интересных собраний буддистского искусства позднего периода XVIII – нач. XX вв. Постоянная экспозиция «Буддистское искусство» отражает все его многообразие, включая буддистскую скульптуру, живопись, аппликацию и пр. В музее также представлены выставки по истории края.
