Ессентукский краеведческий музей образован в 1963 г. Считался музеем на общественных началах. В 1978 г. получает статус государственного. Музей расположен в небольшом курортном городе, поэтому привлекателен для отдыхающих на КМВ. Основными посетителями являются шокльники. При музее работает художественный салон (постояннодействующая выставка работ местных художников).
